V8s could make a return to F1

The use of fully sustainable fuels has allowed Formula 1 and the FIA to consider a less complicated V8 drivetrain for future cars. Even before the latest 2026 turbo hybrid engines have raced in anger, discussion about what to replace them with has started.

A lighter engine with simplified KERS, reducing electrical assistance from the 50% of next year to around 10%, is one element the race’s governing body is considering. So is a cost reduction. The likely result will be a 2.4-litre V8 engine.

Such a radical departure from the F1 powertrain regulations will also result in major chassis changes. This means we’re not likely to see a V8 F1 car until at least 2029, if these plans are implemented.
